Chapter 18: Drink That

The tower cells were cut into the rock, and Elora's had one window the width of her hand.

A grate in the wall beside her cot opened onto Mirelle's cell next door.

They had been talking through it since the guards locked the doors, in low voices, in case someone listened.

"Twenty days," Mirelle said. "And I can't stop looking at it."

"Then look at it," said Elora. "I'll look at the rest."

"What's the rest?"

"The cream paper, the wax, and the book."

"Why the book?"

"Because it's mine." Elora sat up. "I carried it for twenty-seven days. Nobody has touched it without me knowing. And the captain cut it open and there was already a pocket in the lining."

"So someone sewed it in."

"Someone sewed it in before I woke, or after, while I slept. The stitching on the slit was pale gold. I saw it when the leather opened."

"Pale gold thread." Mirelle's voice sharpened. "Elora, that's temple silk. That's what they use on the lamp banners."

"Yes."

"Linnea."

"Maybe. I need a witness who will say it out loud, and I need to ask the right question."

"You're having fun," Mirelle said.

"I'm a little bit having fun," Elora admitted.

A key scraped in the lock at the end of the passage.

Elora stood.

Aurek came down the steps alone, in his black coat, with a covered tray in one hand and a guard behind him who did not dare to follow.

He stopped at her cell door.

The guard unlocked it, looked at the crown prince's face, and went back up the stairs.

Aurek came in and set the tray on the cot.

Then he held up his right hand, so she could see the ink on the side of his finger.

"I signed," he said.

Elora did not move.

It was the sentence she had been afraid of since the first night, in the red letters of the System, and he said it quietly, looking at her.
