Chapter 4: Walk With Me
Aurek Emberlane walked fast and never looked back, and Mirelle had to take two steps for each of his.
She tried the first trick from the playbook.
She matched his pace and kept her voice low and warm.
"It's a beautiful palace," she said. "Did you grow up here?"
"Yes."
"It must have been quiet."
"Yes."
"Is there anything about it you love?"
He did not answer that one at all.
They crossed a stone bridge over a gorge so deep she could not see the bottom.
Wind pulled at her gown, and he moved to her left without a word, putting his body between her and the wind.
She noticed, and decided it did not count.
"Princess," he said. "May I ask you three questions?"
"Only three?"
"Do you sleep through the night?"
Mirelle blinked.
"Usually. Why?"
"What do you eat in the morning?"
"Toast. Coffee, when I can get it." She frowned. "Why do you want to know?"
"Who pours your drink?"
"Nobody. I pour my own."
"Starting tonight," he said, "someone will. A maid I choose. You will drink only what she gives you and eat only what she carries. If a stranger offers you a cup, you say no."
"Is that an order?"
"It is advice."
"It sounds like an order."
"Then take it as one."
He stopped at the end of the bridge, where a white temple stood on the cliff edge with its lamps still burning.
Mirelle looked up at him.
The first hint of dawn was turning the sky grey behind his horns.
In the half-light his eyes were almost kind.
"Your Highness," she said. "Are you trying to protect me?"
For one moment something crossed his face, quick and raw.
Then it was gone, and he was ice again.
"I am trying to be efficient," he said.
The System chimed.
