Chapter 13: The Slap
The sound of it went all the way up the stairwell.
The customer dropped the cologne. It didn't break. It rolled under the counter.
Solène's head came back around slowly.
She didn't put her hand to her cheek.
She looked at him with the left side of her face going red and her eyes perfectly dry.
"That was for the photo," Ashton said. "You made me look like a fool, sweetheart."
"You did that yourself," she said. "I just took the picture."
He lifted his hand again.
He never got it all the way up.
Julien came out of the back room so fast the curtain tore off two of its rings.
He took Ashton by the collar of his gray suit and the back of his belt.
He walked him through the shop, past the shelves and the dusty bottle in the window.
The bell rang over the door as they went through it.
Then he threw him onto the pavement of the Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
Two girls across the street already had their phones up.
Ashton landed on his hands and his knees, in front of the shoe designer's window.
I had mine out too.
I wasn't filming. I was dialing.
