After My Fiancé Humiliated Me, I Ruined Him novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: The Scent of It
Julien read the letter over my shoulder, moving his lips on the French.
Ten years.
He put down the coffee pot.
"Good," he said. "Now eat something."
I called Solène. It was afternoon in Paris.
She picked up laughing. There was music behind her.
"Did you read it?"
"I read it."
"Do you know where I am?" she said. "At lunch. With my grandmother and the counter girls. At the restaurant in the 7th. The one with the candles." I heard a glass clink. "We booked his table. It was free today."
October came to Paris gold and wet.
The chestnut tree in the courtyard dropped its leaves on the stone bench.
Solène and I had once passed a bottle of wine back and forth on it.
Maison Valery had made its first payment on my loan two months early.
Julien had paid it in person.
He'd walked into my office on the avenue Montaigne in his rolled-up sleeves.
He laid the check on my desk.
"Don't frame it," he'd said.
I framed it.
The shop had a waiting list now.
The bottles went out to Boston and Milan and Tokyo in plain brown boxes.
