Chapter 9: Dinner

Julien shook his head at me from across the room. Once, hard.

Solène mouthed, "No."

"I'm listening," I said into the phone.

"Tomorrow, eight o'clock. That little place in the 7th I always told you about. With the candles. Let me do this right, babe. You deserve that."

"I'll think about it."

"That's all I ask."

He hung up.

Julien was already moving. "You're not going."

"I said I'd think about it."

"Think about it, then. And then don't go."

"I'm not going," I said.

I meant it when I said it.

By noon the next day I'd stopped meaning it.

My COO said, "He'll say things to you he won't say to anyone else. Wear a recorder. And take a driver who's built like a refrigerator."

So I did.

The restaurant was on a quiet street near the Invalides.

There were candles in old wine bottles and red banquettes.

A waiter called Ashton "monsieur Trask" like an old friend.

The same table where he'd proposed to Solène, if her notebook was right.

He stood up when I came in.

He tried to kiss my cheek.

I sat down before he could.

"You look beautiful," he said. "You always looked beautiful."

My phone was face down on the table, recording.

He ordered for both of us without asking. Champagne first.

I let him.

"I know how those texts read," he said. "I know. I've reread them a hundred times."

"Have you."

"I was in a bad place, Diana. I was drinking. My business was falling apart. I think I had some kind of breakdown. I don't even remember writing half of it."

"You remembered to wait until I was on a plane."

He winced.

"That was cowardly. I admit that. I'm a coward. I'm working on it."

The champagne came.

He raised his glass.

I didn't raise mine.

"And the baby?" I said.
