Chapter 10: First Night

He took the jar out of my hand and set it on the porch rail.

Then he stopped, with his hands hanging open.

He looked at me.

"Once I start," Lachlan said, "I don't think I can be gentle."

"Who asked you to be?"

His breath left him in a rough laugh.

He caught my face in both hands and kissed me.

It was nothing like the study.

There was no careful edge left in it, no brakes.

His mouth took mine open, and his beard scraped my chin.

I pulled him down by his shirt until the porch boards creaked under us.

He carried me inside without breaking the kiss.

The door slammed behind us.

He pushed me back against it, and his hands slid under my coat and shoved it off my shoulders.

It hit the floor.

"Three years," he said against my neck. "Three years I could smell you through the walls."

"Then stop smelling," I said, "and touch."

His teeth scraped my throat.

He peeled my sweater over my head and dropped it, and my bra went after it.

The cold air hit my skin for one second before his mouth covered my breast.

I cried out.

He sucked hard, and his tongue circled, and my hands tangled in his hair.

My knees went.

He caught me with one arm around my waist and swung me up against him.

"Bedroom," I gasped.

"Upstairs."

"Too far? Or are you too old to carry me, Alpha?"

He stopped on the third stair and looked up at me with his eyes burning gold.

"Say that again," he said, very low.

"Hurry up."

He took the rest of the stairs two at a time.

The bed was huge and dark, with a quilt that smelled like pine and him.

He laid me down and stood over me, breathing hard, and pulled his henley off over his head.

He was broad and scarred across the ribs, and the muscle in his stomach moved when he breathed.

I had never seen him without a shirt before the night in the snow.
