Chapter 19: The Robe in the Bin

Dominic drove the whole way up the hill one-handed, slowly, with his sling against the wheel.

"You could let a guard take us," I said.

"You said I'm driving."

"I didn't say you had to be stubborn about it."

"I'm a Ventresca. It's the same thing."

I laughed, and then I stopped, because I realized I had laughed.

The house sat dark behind its gate with the porch light on.

Fitz had changed the locks on Friday morning and left me two new keys.

I let myself in.

The hall smelled of lemon polish, and nothing else.

I walked down the length of it to the kitchen and turned on the light.

My white robe lay folded on the counter where the guards had left it, still creased where Gia had worn it.

I stood and looked at it.

Then I picked it up, opened the cabinet under the sink, and dropped it in the bin.

"Annie," Dominic said from the doorway.

"I'm not finished."

"Come here," I said.

He came and stood in front of me, close, and he did not touch me.

"I'm going to say it, and you'll listen."

"I'm listening."

"You don't lie to me. You don't decide for me, ever again. You want to give something up, you ask me first. You want to go somewhere dangerous, you tell me, and I'll decide if I'm coming."

"Yes."

"You don't follow me." I took a new key from my bag and held it up. "You come when I give you this."

I put it in his palm.

His fingers closed over it very slowly.

"And you touch me when I say."

"Say it," he said, and his voice broke on it. "Please."
