Chapter 22: The Heir
Celandine didn't move.
For a long moment she stood on the steps with her hand at the torc, staring down at the boy on the stones.
"Lady Celandine!" the King screamed again.
She went down to the prince and knelt beside him in her white fur.
She took his hand.
She started to sing the pudding song.
Nobody laughed this time.
The prince's back arched off the steps.
He screamed, and the scream went down into a roar halfway through.
His fine coat split up the back.
Celandine scrambled away on her hands.
The dragon that came up out of the prince was white-gold and long, the size of a small barn, and its eyes were white all the way through.
It knocked the King's chair down the steps with one sweep of its wing.
The court ran.
Half the city crowd ran with them, back toward the gate, screaming.
The white-gold dragon went straight up off the steps and over the Eyrie wall.
I watched it go over the roofs of Highcrag.
It swung round the chapel tower and breathed fire, and the chapel roof went up.
