Chapter 9: The Dock

I found him the next night on the long dock behind the yard.

The sheds were dark and the crew had gone home.

Water slapped the pilings below us, and a single work lamp threw a yellow circle on the planks.

Anders sat at the end with his boots hanging over the edge and a thermos beside him.

He heard me coming.

He didn't turn around.

"I hoped you'd come," he said.

"I didn't come to be kind."

"I know."

I stood behind him with my arms crossed.

The wind off the lake was bitter.

"Start at the beginning," I said. "Don't skip anything."

He nodded slowly.

"Fourteen months ago, Signe told me you'd lied about a Tuesday."

"What Tuesday?"

"A Tuesday in October. She said you told me you were working a night shift and you were at the casino in Duluth." He rubbed his face. "I wanted to believe her. She's my sister. She runs half my life."

"And?"

"And I checked the shift log, because I check everything. You were on the floor at the hospice from seven at night until seven in the morning. Twelve patient notes in your handwriting. A man died at four, and you charted the time yourself."

I remembered the man.

I had held his hand.

"I thought it was a mistake," Anders said. "I looked at the next one. Then the next. By Christmas I had thirty."

"Thirty."

"Every one false. Every one in her handwriting, or in a text from your phone that you couldn't have sent."
