Chapter 18: The Young Father

"When did you last eat?"

"Last night. Steak. Six eggs. I fast till noon." She pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes. "Then I ran ten miles."

"Do you know what day it is?"

She thought about it too long.

"Thursday?"

It had taken her too long to find it.

I stuck my head out the door and shouted across the gap between the buildings.

"Fergus! Keys!"

He came out of the diner at a run, still in his apron.

University was fifteen minutes away.

He made it in eight.

I called the metabolic attending on the way, the one with the bow tie.

"Mayhew," he said. "Please tell me you're not at a gala."

"Twenty-year-old woman on the Carnivore Reset," I said. "Confused, vomiting, ten miles fasted on top of a protein load. I need an ammonia on ice at the door."

He had a nurse waiting at the ambulance bay with a tube in a cup of ice.

Her ammonia was two and a half times the limit.

We stopped all protein, ran sugar into her vein, and gave her the scavenger.

By midnight she knew the date.

By morning she was hungry for toast.

"You might carry a gene," I told her, sitting on the end of her bed. "The same kind Emerson Kenley has. Some women carry it and never know. A normal life hides it. Fasting and steak and ten miles found it."

"So I'm sick?"

"You're careful. That's different. We'll test you, and I'll write you an eating plan that lets you run."

She cried, and then she told me everything.

She'd signed up for the Reset Clinical Study in January through her college track team's sponsor.

On day nine she'd collapsed in her dorm.

Three days in a hospital in New Jersey.

"They said it was dehydration," she said. "And then a man came to my dorm with a check."
