Chapter 4: Written on a Placemat

"There aren't any pills," I said.

Silence on the line.

I could hear a television somewhere behind him, and Trina laughing.

"Don't be like this," Emerson said. "The white bottle. In the cabinet over the sink."

"That's vitamin D."

"Luna."

"There were never any pills, Emerson. It was the food."

"What food?"

"Everything you ate for three years. I weighed it. Forty grams of protein a day. Rice in the morning, never a skipped breakfast, never a steak bigger than my palm. Your headaches stopped because I stopped them."

He breathed out through his nose.

I knew that sound.

It was the sound he made at board members who used too many slides.

"You're telling me," he said, "that you've been secretly putting me on a diet."

"I've been keeping you alive."

"Wow." He laughed, and it was short and ugly. "Trina said you'd do something like this."

"How's your head right now?"

He didn't answer.

"Is it behind your eyes? Do you feel sick? Did the steak sit in your stomach like a stone?"

"I feel fine."

"Then why did you call me at midnight?"

He hung up.

I sat in the booth with the dead phone in my hand.

Fergus came out with a phone charger and plugged it into the outlet under the jukebox without a word.

"That one's yours now," he said. "The booth too, if you want it. Nobody sits there except the guy who reads horse racing, and he's dead."

"He's dead?"

"Last spring. Great tipper." He wiped the table. "You okay, Doc?"

"No."

"Fair."

He brought me toast.

I didn't go to Veronica's test on Friday.

At nine o'clock a black car idled outside my hotel for forty minutes and then left.

I spent the day at the diner.

I spent most of the next four days there too.

I told myself it was because the hotel was depressing.
