Chapter 6: Upstairs Window

The lawyer had an office over a nail salon on Passyunk Avenue.

Fergus found him.

"He did my custody papers for Ciara," he said, writing the address on a napkin. "He's cheap, he's mean, and he hates rich people. You'll love him."

The lawyer was sixty, bald, and ate sunflower seeds the whole time I talked.

He read clause fourteen twice.

Then he laughed so hard he had to take his glasses off.

"You can't sign away custody of a child in a contract," he said. "Not in Pennsylvania. Not anywhere I know of. A judge decides custody on the best interests of the kid. Period."

My shoulders came down an inch.

"So it's nothing."

"I didn't say that." "The clause is garbage. But she doesn't need it to win. She needs it to start. She files, she argues the contract shows intent, she drags in experts. Her lawyers bill eight hundred an hour and she doesn't care how long it takes."

"How long?"

"A year. Maybe more. And every month of it, they'll be looking at you." He pointed a seed at me. "Where you live. Who you live with. Whether you've got a job."

"I don't have any of those."

"Then get them," he said. "My retainer's five grand."

I had two hundred thousand dollars of Kenley money in the bank.

I didn't want to touch it.

Every dollar of it would look like Veronica's money in a courtroom, and she would make sure it did.

That afternoon an urgent care on Oregon Avenue asked if I could start Tuesday.

I said I could start in an hour.

I did my first shift in a white coat that smelled like someone else's detergent.

Sore throats. A sprained wrist. A construction worker with a nail through his boot who called me "kid" until I took the nail out.

I hadn't touched a patient in three years.
