Chapter 7: Her Robe

The assistant had driven him home to Delancey Street.

I took a cab there in my urgent care scrubs with my coat over them.

On the way, I wrote a letter on a page torn from my gram notebook.

I wrote it the way I'd write orders for a night resident who'd never heard of the disease.

Then I folded it into an envelope from the cab driver's glove box and sealed it.

The brick front of the house looked exactly the same.

I rang the bell of a house I'd had a key to for three years.

Trina Galvin opened the door.

She was wearing my robe.

Gray cashmere, belted at the waist, the one I'd bought with my first month's pay because I'd never owned anything soft.

It was too short on her.

"Oh my God," she said, delighted. "It's the cook."

"I need to see Emerson."

"He's resting."

"He walked into the wrong building this morning and didn't know how he got there. He's not resting. He's sick."

Her smile stayed on, but her eyes went hard and quick.

"Babe!" she called over her shoulder. "Your ex-wife is here to diagnose you!"

Emerson came down the stairs slowly, one hand on the rail.

He was in a T-shirt and suit trousers, barefoot.

His skin had a waxy gray look I'd seen on the wards.

"What are you doing here?" he said.

"Your assistant called me."

"She shouldn't have."

"Emerson, listen to me. The fog, the headaches, putting your phone in the fridge. It's ammonia. It's building every day you're on that plan. It's going to keep building."

"I'm adapting," he said. "Trina says the first two weeks are the worst."

"Trina is a family doctor who sells meal plans."

"Excuse me?" Trina said.

"You have an enzyme deficiency." I kept my voice level, the way I'd talk to a scared patient. "Your liver can't finish breaking down protein. I know it sounds crazy. Please, just let me draw one blood test. One. Then you never have to see me again."
