Chapter 7: Hiding in the Taffeta

"Rosalind is building a file on you," Noelle said in the doorway at midnight.

"Photographs, a list of dates, a letter from a lawyer."

"She wants Tobias to leave you before the Founders' Dinner, and she wants everyone to think he had no choice."

"Why would she care?"

"The chair of Renner Holdings goes to whoever the board trusts. She wants it, and he's in her way."

"A husband who has a cheating wife looks like a man who can't run his own house."

She left the house at ten, in the car, with Dennis driving.

I took a taxi and told the driver to stay four cars back.

The car stopped outside a small dress boutique with a curtained window, and Noelle went in.

I went in two minutes behind her, with my hat pulled down.

Hiding place one was a coat stand.

I stood behind it for six minutes.

Then a saleswoman asked if I'd like to try on the coat I was standing in.

"No, thank you," I said, from inside it.

Hiding place two was a rolling rack of evening gowns.

I stepped into the middle and pulled the hangers closed around me.
