Chapter 23: Monday
By nine on Monday morning the queue outside Ladbrook & Co ran round the corner of St James's Street.
The Sunday paper had run the story across its front page and eight inside.
The photograph was Crispin at the altar rail, with his mouth open and a white rose in his lapel.
Customers stood in the drizzle holding bank cards and folded cheques and arguing with the doorman, and a girl with a clipboard counted them.
My father and I went straight past them, up the steps, and the doorman let us through without a word.
"Is it always this loud?" my father said.
"No, Dad."
The boardroom was on the second floor, and its walnut table had a dozen men and women round it.
At the head sat a thin man in rimless glasses, the deputy chairman.
Honoria's chair stood empty, pushed back from the table, with her papers still in front of it.
"Mr Marchbanks," the thin man said, and stood. "Miss Marchbanks. Thank you for coming.
"The board met at eight.
"We have withdrawn the call on your loan, and we have released the charge on the Marchbanks Grand and your other three properties, with the bank's apologies."
"On what terms?" my father asked.
"None. There is a letter from the regulator on my desk, and I would like it to say we acted promptly."
My father sat down very slowly, and put his hat on the table.
I did not sit.
"Where is she?" I asked.
"Mrs Ladbrook is in the lobby. She came to clear her office."
