Chapter 7: Tidy

"A recording is a lawyer's afternoon," Clement said.

It was past ten that night, and we were parked under a railway arch in Kennington with the engine off.

I had played him the study tape twice at his table, and he had listened to it standing up with his arms folded.

"He said 'I'd never put it that way.' They'll say it was a joke. They'll say I coerced you, and Honoria plays golf with the inspector who'd take the report."

"So what do we need?"

"A man who'll say yes with his own mouth.

"Tidy has a number, and the number is registered to a car yard on this street."

Under the arch, between two shuttered bays, a corrugated door stood a foot open and a light burned inside.

"Stay in the car," Clement said.

"No."

"Thea."

It was the first time he had said my first name.

I got out anyway.

The lock-up smelled of petrol and cold tea.

A man sat on an upturned crate under a bare bulb with a vape in one hand and a phone in the other.

He was forty-something, thin and quick, with a tracksuit top zipped to the chin.

He saw Clement and his eyes went past him to me.

He was off the crate before either of us moved.

He grabbed an iron bar from the bench and swung it at Clement's head.
