Chapter 11: What the Waiter Saw

"I didn't push her," I said.

I said it plainly, to the whole ballroom, with the roses still in my hand.

Colin was on his knees with Delphine across his lap, and two security guards were already crossing the floor.

"Everyone saw!" Colin shouted.

"Then ask everyone," I said.

I turned in a slow circle and looked at the tables.

"Who was standing near us? Who saw my hands?"

Nobody spoke.

Then a young waiter at the edge of the crowd lifted his tray an inch and cleared his throat.

"Ma'am, I was two feet from you."

"What did you see?"

"You were holding flowers. She reached for your sleeve." He swallowed. "You didn't touch her at all."

Colin turned his head.

"You're lying. She's paying you."

"I'm paid by the catering company, sir."

The violinist from my audition panel stood up from the board table with her napkin still in her hand.

"I was watching her too," she said. "She looked at the photographer before she went down."

A murmur went around the room.

The dean said, "I saw it as well."

Colin's mouth opened and shut.

I knelt beside him and the girl in his arms.

Delphine's eyes were closed and her lashes lay wet on her cheeks.

I took out my phone and said, in a clear, kind voice, "I'm going to call an ambulance, Delphine. It's not safe to move you."

Her eyes flew open.

"No."

She said it quickly, and sat up.

Everyone in the room saw it.

"No, I'm all right. I'm so sorry, it's only a dizzy spell." She pressed a hand to her chest and tried a brave smile. "I haven't eaten since yesterday. Please don't make a fuss."
