Chapter 14: What June Left Chalked
The guard sat on the cabin bench with a blanket round his shoulders and would not drink Ansel's coffee.
Two more Greywater wolves stood behind him in the doorway, a young woman and a man with grey in his beard.
Between them they had carried a flat shape wrapped in a feed sack down the whole length of the north road.
"I'm the one you threw," the guard said to me. "I'm not here to complain."
"I'm sorry about your arm," I said.
"Don't be. I felt a wolf stronger than the Alpha lift me off the ground and put me down gently. Nobody has done that to me since I was a pup."
He nodded to the young woman, and she pulled the sack away.
It was the slate from the healer's hut, with its chalk strokes ranked down the front.
"We turned it over," the young woman said.
I took it in both hands and flipped it.
The back was crowded with June's small round handwriting.
At the top she had written: Alpha's share.
Under it ran a column of ten dates, and the first of them fell in the week Carson and I were bonded.
Beside every date was a note.
T. fever. Tea. Hold her.
Beside the sixth she had added: Council asks questions. Ignore.
Beside the tenth, the last, she had written only: Gathering. Cutter.
"Cutter," Ansel said, very quietly.
"What is that?" I asked.
"It's the Council's cutter," the man with the grey beard said. "When a thief is convicted, a cutter takes her wolf out of her with a stone knife, and the strength goes back to the one she robbed."
Nobody spoke.
The wind pushed at the cabin door.
"She wrote it down the week I was bonded," I said. "She knew from the first week how it would end."
