Chapter 24: Home Ground

The first real snow of the winter fell on the night Shadowfang took me up the hill.

I had been home for nine days.

I had a clinic in the feed barn with my name painted on the door, and a room in Hester's house I had stopped thinking of as the spare.

I had not been told what the rite would be.

"You'll know it when you're in it," Hester said, pinning my braid with a hand that was not quite steady. "Don't look at me. I'm cutting onions."

"You're not cutting anything."

"Then it's the stove. Go."

The whole pack stood in the ring of pines with lanterns, and the snow came down through the light in slow, fat flakes.

The Moon Stone rose grey and plain at the top of the hill, and it was already glowing, a faint steady silver.

The small boy from the beam stood near the front with his mother.

He had his ball in his arms, and he waved at me with it.

The Beta who had never smiled at me smiled again.

At the foot of the Stone stood a wide stone seat that had stood empty for twelve winters.

Ansel was not at the Stone.

He was at the edge of the ring, in his canvas jacket, with his hands empty at his sides and his back to the pines.

I walked up the hill alone, and nobody spoke to me.

"At Greywater a man asks a woman to step aside," Ansel said, when I was close. His voice carried over the snow. "At Shadowfang the Alpha stands out of the ring and waits."
