Chapter 9: Terms
"I'll stay," Wanning said. "On terms."
Chengxiao shifted against the pillow, and the effort cost him a breath.
"Name them."
"First. The Crown Prince is mine."
"Yours."
"My father's trial, my name, my revenge. You don't take it for me." She held up a finger. "You can stand beside me while I do it. You can't do it in my place."
He considered this for the length of two breaths.
"He is my nephew. I have more reason to bury him than you do."
"You have a reason. I have a grave."
His eyes changed.
"Agreed," he said.
"Second. No more lies. Not the large ones, not the small ones. If you've heard it, or seen it, or know it, you say it."
"That is a heavy term for a man raised in a palace."
"It's a heavy term for a man who lay in my bridal chamber and listened to me confess."
"Fair." The corner of his mouth lifted. "And you?"
"I'll tell you everything."
"Everything?"
"I'm not good at lying. You've seen it."
"I did hear you cry on my arm."
"Third." She cut him off. "We sleep apart. You have the bed. I'll take the couch by the window, where I can watch your pulse."
"Princess."
"It is a very good couch."
"It's too short for you."
"I've slept in a woodshed for three years, Your Highness. A short couch is not an insult."
Something moved in his face at that, and he looked away.
"Agreed," he said, more quietly.
The door opened and Shi An came in without knocking, holding a sheet of paper and a brush.
"I heard raised voices," he said. "I took the liberty of writing it down, so there will be no argument later."
