Chapter 23: Gravel

Tyler caught me in the gravel lot behind the barn.

The party had broken into small furious knots of people on the lawn.

Coats were half on and phones were out, and the white lights still glowed over the doors.

"Sig. Signe, wait."

I stopped by my mother's car and turned around.

His tie was loose. His hair stood up where he had pushed his hands through it.

"Please," he said. "Five minutes."

"You have until my mother finds her keys."

"It was her idea. All of it. You know what Vera's like, she gets an idea and she..."

"You wrote the slips with her."

"I laughed. I didn't write."

"You held my hand in the car, Tyler. You said you told Vee."

He flinched at the name.

"I was scared," he said. "I didn't know how to stop it."

"You could have said stop."

"I'm saying it now."

"You're saying it now," I said, "because you're standing in a parking lot."

He went down on one knee in the gravel, the way he had when he proposed.

"I love you. I do. You're the only one I ever..."

"That might even be true," I said. "It isn't enough."

He put his forehead against my hand.

I took it back.

"Your things will be in the hallway of the apartment on Saturday," I said. "Two boxes. The landlord has your name on the lease, and he'll want to talk to you."

"Where will I go?"

"I'd start by finding out where Vera lives."

Behind him, across the lot, a gray-haired man in a camel overcoat helped a young woman in green velvet into the back of a car.

She didn't look at me. She sat with both hands on her stomach and her face turned to the window.
