Chapter 12: The Luna in the Rain

"Stay on the porch," I told Jasper.

"No."

"She came to the boundary line and not to the house. She wants to talk to me, not to you."

His jaw worked.

"Ten minutes," I said. "Please."

He said nothing for a moment.

"Ten minutes," he said at last. "I'll be at the gate. If she touches you, I'll hear it."

The rain started as I walked down the drive.

It came in cold and slanting, and it soaked my gray shirt before I reached the end of the gravel.

The car door opened.

My mother stepped out in her camel coat with no umbrella, and the rain flattened her silver-blonde hair against her skull.

She held a silver picture frame against her chest with both arms.

"Calla."

"You shouldn't be here."

"I know." Her voice cracked. "Your father thinks I'm at my sister's. Please, baby, give me five minutes."

I stopped an arm's length from her.

She looked at my wrists, and at the scar around my throat, and she began to cry.

"I never saw it," she said. "I never let myself go to the prison. I told your father I couldn't. I told myself you were all right."

"I wasn't."

"I know."

"Say what you came to say."

She wiped her face with the heel of her hand, and it did no good in the rain.

"Call off the test," she said.

I laughed.

I couldn't help it.

It was a hard, ugly little sound.

"Please," she said. "Withdraw it. Tell the Council you made a mistake, that five years in silver had scrambled you. Your father will take you back. Faye will give up the seat. You can have everything. I'll make them give you everything."
