Lucan's POV

I hadn't slept since the storm.

I sat in my study with the lights off and the window open.

From the window I could smell north.

Fourteen miles of forest, and I could still tell where she was.

My wolf had been pacing for six days.

For twenty-nine years he had been a quiet animal who did what I told him.

Now he walked the inside of my ribs and would not lie down.

On my desk lay the stack I had signed on Monday.

The clerk had filed it by mistake, and brought it back that afternoon with a note about missing initials.

I turned over pages I had never read.

A fence repair bill. A permit for the river road.

Page thirty-eight.

It was one sheet in Ada's handwriting, in the small upright print I had seen on every letter I'd ever signed.

I resign my post as executive assistant, effective today.

Thank you for five years.

Please don't look for me.

Under it was her signature, and below that was my own, in black ink.

I had signed it while I was saying eleven-forty to an airline.

I read it again.

Then I put my fist against my mouth and sat very still.

She had put it in front of me and watched me sign it.

She had stood at my elbow and said nothing.

She had turned the pages for me herself.

I tried to think of one day in five years when I had turned a page for her.

I couldn't.
