Chapter 12: What She Never Said

Lucan arrived at dusk, alone, on foot, from the white stones.

He had smelled the blood from fourteen miles away.

Emmett met him in the yard with the knife still in his hand.

"She's alive," Emmett said. "She's fine. She's in the kitchen. You get one hour, and then you leave."

"Where did the knife come from?"

Emmett held out the handle.

Lucan looked at the gold flower inside the W.

I watched through the kitchen window as his face went still.

He didn't say anything.

He walked in and shut the door.

He stood in front of me with a small clear case in his hand.

"I brought you something," he said. "I need you to hear it."

"I have a kettle on."

"Please."

I turned off the kettle.

He put an old tape player on the table and pressed the button.

Then he stood back with his hands at his sides.

The Priestess's voice came out into the little kitchen.

I see no name yet, Lucan.

Do not let anyone name her for you.

It played to the end.

When it stopped he said, "I was twelve. My father told me she said the first snow."

"And Camille came with the first snow."

"The next week."

I put both palms flat on the table.

"Your father did that."

"I don't know yet. I think so."

"You think so."

"I went to his study tonight. He wasn't there. I came here instead."

I stared at the tape.

"The moonroot is in my tea," I said. "I'm going to say that out loud once, so that you've heard it. It's in the tea your father's housekeeper brought me every full moon. She told me this morning. She was told to put it there."
