Chapter 18: Ada's POV

Ada's POV

Lucan came to the cabin at first light with a green book under his arm and the Priestess walking beside him.

I stood on the porch in my patrol jacket and watched them cross the white stones.

She leaned on his arm, small and grey, and she looked as though she had walked all night.

Emmett came out behind me with his coffee.

"Both of them on my land," he said. "Should I charge a toll?"

"Let them in."

"I'm letting them in. I'm just saying it's the principle."

We sat at the kitchen table, the four of us, with the book open between the sugar and the salt.

Lucan turned it to face me and didn't say a word.

I read down the column.

Moonroot, dried. One pound. Every full moon.

Five years of dates, and every one of them in Corwin's hand.

The first was the morning after we buried my mother.

I put my finger on the margin.

For the girl only. Tell no one.

"What does it do?" I asked the Priestess.

She folded her hands.

"A little calms a wolf before surgery," she said. "A little more, taken every month, dulls what a wolf can feel of her bond. Not the bond itself. The Goddess draws that, and no herb can undraw it. But a wolf who drinks it cannot feel the pull."

I thought of the five years.

I thought of lying in Lucan's bed, content and a little lonely, wondering why I was the only gamma in the pack who felt nothing at all.

"I never felt it," I said.

"No."

"I thought something was wrong with me."

"Nothing was wrong with you, child." Her voice was very dry and very gentle. "I saw the line at your mother's funeral. It was faint, as they are when two people are of age and have not yet touched. It ran from you to him. I told Corwin so, in the garden."
