Chapter 21: Lucan's POV

Lucan's POV

On the seventh night as Alpha, I drove to the white stones at eleven, parked, and walked the last mile.

I did not drive up to her door.

It seemed like a thing I had no right to do.

My ribs had knit in three days, because wolves heal, and the cut on my flank had faded to a pink line.

The rest of me had not healed at all.

I had signed forty orders that day, and I had read every word of every one.

I had sealed Corwin in the old hunting lodge on the north ridge, with two enforcers on the door and the Beta's word that he would stay there until the council decided what to do with him.

I had sat across from Camille in the guest wing, and she had not been able to look at me.

"Your father is coming for you at the weekend," I had said. "The Deverell Alpha. He's furious. Not with you, I think."

"You are very kind," she said, which was the worst thing she could have said.

I had burned the confidentiality addendum in the grate in my study.

I'd kept the ashes, in an envelope, and left them on Ada's porch rail on the first night.

I had left the pen on the second.

On the third night I had left a signed order, sealed with my own seal, for the family hill.

On the fourth I'd left nothing.

I had only sat on the step with my back against her door.
