Chapter 4: The Border Post

I didn't answer Lucan.

I turned my phone face down on Kerensa's counter and hugged her until she complained about my ribs.

Before noon I was driving north in my own car.

The Red Cedar Pack kept a patrol cabin where the Ashmoor fence ended, six miles up a gravel road.

It had a flag on a pole and a woodpile bigger than the cabin.

A man in a canvas jacket was splitting logs in the yard.

He looked up, saw me, and set the axe head down in the stump.

"You're Sterne's assistant."

"I'm Ada Wickham. Not anymore."

"Emmett Hessel." He didn't offer his hand, because it was full of sawdust. "I know your handwriting. You send us the fence permits. Spelled my name right, every time. Nobody does that."

"I'd like a job."

"Doing what?"

"Patrol. Tracking. Anything outdoors."

His eyes went to my side, where I was holding myself carefully.

"You're hurt."

"A rogue. Saturday. It's stitched."

"Whose rogue?"

"Yours now," I said. "He crossed your line Sunday night. I followed the scent to the creek before I turned back."

For the first time he looked interested.

"Huh," he said. "Prove it."

His two patrol wolves were on the porch, a broad quiet man and a lanky woman with a cigarette.

Both pretended they weren't listening.

Emmett pointed up the slope with his chin. "Anyone finds that rogue by dark, I'll give them lunch. Go."
