Chapter 6: The Alpha at the Creek
He came on foot after midnight, alone.
I was at the creek in my chair with a blanket around my shoulders, because I couldn't sleep and the water was easier to look at than the ceiling.
Trudy had gone to bed. Hoyt had told the camp to stay behind their doors.
He hadn't told them to stop watching.
I heard the gravel before I saw him, one slow step and then another.
He stopped at the edge of the lantern light.
His hands were open and empty at his sides.
"I watched you shift," Thane said.
"Then you saw it."
"I saw a wolf I've never seen." He coughed, and turned his head to do it. "Where did you get that?"
"I don't know."
"Freya."
"I don't know, Thane. Ask your healer. She's the one who tells you everything."
He flinched, but he came a step closer.
"Hunters were sent here tonight," he said. "I didn't order it."
"You didn't stop it, either."
"I came to stop it."
"You came after it was over."
He didn't answer.
The creek ran black over the stones.
"Say what you came to say," I said.
He took a long breath. When he spoke, it came out of him in pieces.
"After the ford, my wolf went quiet. I couldn't shift without it hurting. I started getting sick. I've never been sick in my life."
"I noticed the cold."
"Lorna said it was the bond." His mouth twisted. "She said a Luna who couldn't heal was pulling on me every hour, and the longer I stayed tied to you, the weaker I'd get. She said if I cut it clean, I'd get my strength back by the Winter Moon."
