Chapter 9: Thane's POV

Thane's POV

I woke in my own bed with the curtains drawn and two hunters standing outside my door.

I knew they were there because I could hear them breathe.

I could hear a great many things, as it happened. What I couldn't hear was my wolf.

For six weeks I had listened for it.

Nothing.

I sat up, and the room tilted.

The housekeeper had left a tray on the nightstand. There was a cup of broth and a note in my Beta's handwriting.

Rest. I'll handle the council. W.

I put the note down.

Luther had stood by my bed for twenty years. He had taught me how to hold a line, and how to sit through a long meeting, and how to give a hard order to a friend.

I tried to remember if I had ever once asked him a question that he hadn't already answered before I finished.

I swung my legs off the bed.

The hunter opened the door a hand's width.

"Alpha," he said. "The Beta asked that you stay in. For your health."

"I'm going to the Stone Hall."

"Sir, the Beta gave an order."

"I'm going to the Stone Hall," I said. "You can walk behind me."

He did.

I made it across the yard without leaning on anything, which cost me more than the entire climb to the dais had.

The Stone Hall is the oldest building on Redwater land.

It has one room and one wall, and the wall is the Stone.

Every wolf of the pack has a name cut into it in the first month of their life. Every Luna's name is cut deeper than the rest, in the gold stone at the center.

A woman was scrubbing the steps with a bucket.

She looked up when my shadow fell across her, and went white.

"Alpha."

"Don't get up," I said. "You're the boy's mother. From the market."
