Chapter 18: The Lowell Camp

Rosalind crossed the river at the shallow ford with a white tablecloth tied to a stick.

She went alone.

Perrin had begged, and Maud had cursed, and Dorian had stood in front of her in the yard with his burned back wrapped in bandages and said nothing at all.

Then he had stepped aside.

"It's your pack," he said.

"Yes."

"Then go."

It was the right answer, and she had kissed him for it once, hard, in front of all of them.

Now she climbed the far bank in wet boots with the white cloth snapping over her head.

Wolves came out of the pines to meet her.

They were big men in dark coats with green sashes, forty of them, and they pointed their spears at her chest.

"Ansel Lowell," she said. "Tell him the Luna of Greywater has come to talk."

They took her through the camp.

It was a good camp, with fires and tents and horse lines, and it smelled of tallow and wet wool.

At the centre stood a big canvas tent with a hound's head painted on the flap.

Ansel Lowell sat in front of it on a folding chair, with a rug across his knees and a cup of wine in his hand.

He was heavy and grey-bearded, and he looked at her with open pleasure.

"Well," he said. "Look what the river dragged in."

"You burned my grandmother's flour store."

"Did I?"

"There was a child in the loft."

"Children are always where they shouldn't be." He sipped his wine. "I'm sorry for it. I really am. But my daughter tells me you're a stubborn girl."

Rosalind's eyes went past him.

Pippa sat in the shadow of the tent flap on a camp stool, wrapped in a fur.

The storehouse had been found open at dawn, with the guards asleep on the floor and a cup of drugged tea beside them.

Pippa did not look up.

"You'll give her back to us," Rosalind said. "She poisoned my pack in front of three hundred witnesses."
