Chapter 20: The Winter Moon
The Winter Moon rose over the Gathering Hall yard, round and white, and every wolf of Greywater stood under it.
Three hundred of them filled the packed snow, in coats and blankets, with their children on their hips.
Rosalind stood on the hall steps in her grandmother's grey shawl.
Perrin stood below her on one side.
Dorian stood on the other, unarmed, with his bandaged back under a loose shirt, and he did not look at anyone but her.
Maud sat on a chair at the foot of the steps with a rug on her knees.
"Here they come," Maud said.
Ansel Lowell rode in through the front gate with forty riders at his back.
They came at a walk, in a long green column, and the wolves of Greywater drew back to let them in.
Behind the last horse a wagon rolled, with a tarp across its load and two big barrels under the tarp.
Pippa rode behind the wagon.
Nine Greywater men walked at her stirrup with their eyes on the ground.
She sat in the saddle with her chin up and her hair in a pale braid, and she looked at nobody.
Ansel drew rein at the bottom of the steps.
"Greywater," he called, in a big, easy voice. "I am Ansel Lowell of Ironwood, and I have come for your hearth."
Nobody answered.
"You have no Alpha. Your Alpha stands there like a kicked dog, and your Luna can't walk across her own yard without bleeding." He spread his hands. "I am offering you a roof, a table and a name."
A child began to cry somewhere in the crowd.
