Chapter 4: Nothing to Command

The silence in the yard lasted until a small white car came down the road.

It stopped behind Dorian's truck, and Pippa got out with a basket on her arm.

She wore a cream coat and no hat, and she had been crying.

"Dorian," she said, and put a hand on his sleeve. "Don't. They're frightened, that's all."

"They're disobeying me."

"They're confused." She turned to the yard with her soft round face tilted. "Please, everyone. Nobody is angry with you. The Luna's ill and you love her. So do I."

A few wolves looked away.

Rosalind came down the porch steps one at a time, with Perrin a pace behind her.

"I'm not confused," she said. "I'm divorced."

Pippa's eyes went to her, wide and worried.

"Rosalind, you're not well. You can't decide a thing like this tonight." She held out the basket. "I brought your medicine from the house. And the blue blanket you like."

"Thank you."

"Please let the healer look at you."

Rosalind looked at the thin grey healer, who stood in the snow with her bag and did not look at anyone.

"The healer can look," Rosalind said. "Granny's kitchen. Dorian stays outside."

He opened his mouth.

"Outside," she said. "Or you can say it to the boy again."

The wolves near the fire made a sound that was not quite a laugh.

Dorian shut his mouth.

The healer listened to her chest in the kitchen with a cold steel disc.

She listened closely, frowned and wrote nothing down.

"The damage is real," she said finally. "Both lungs. Five months in bed made it worse. She needs clean air and warm steam, and she needs to be out of that room."
