Chapter 14: Gene Comes to Mass
Kaz was dressed in moments, with his hoodie on inside out.
Fintan fixed it for him at the bottom of the spiral stair, without a word, and then took him by both shoulders.
"You don't have to go out there."
"He's on the steps. In front of a news van."
"A what?"
"I can see it from the window. It has a satellite dish."
Fintan's jaw went tight.
"Then I'm coming."
"You're coming behind me," Kaz said. "He needs to see me walk out alone."
He unbolted the great doors himself and pushed them open into the gray morning.
The cold hit his face.
On the sidewalk stood Gene in a clean jacket, with his camo cap held over his heart.
Beside him a woman in a red coat held a microphone.
A cameraman walked backward down the steps with a lens pointed at Kaz's face.
"Kasimir," Gene said.
His voice cracked, perfectly, on the second syllable.
"Dad."
"Look at you. Look at my boy." Gene came up the steps with his arms open. "I've been out of my mind for two weeks."
