Chapter 23: The Long Night

She had set the kitchen table for two.

There were two mugs, a loaf of bread, and the paid note, flat under the saltshaker.

Ingrid sat across from me with her braid over her shoulder and her hands around her coffee.

"I'm going to say this once," she said.

"I'm listening."

"Your month is up on the first. The rule was one month, rent in cash. I'm cancelling the rent."

My stomach dropped. "You want me gone."

"Finbar." She almost laughed. "No. Listen to me."

She pushed a sheet of paper across the table.

It was a draft agreement in her blocky handwriting, with a line at the bottom for each of us.

"Forty-nine percent of Halvorsen Marine for twenty-six thousand dollars," she said. "Mine is fifty-one. You don't rescue me. You buy in. You'll fix what's broken and you'll take your share of what comes."

"A partner."

"A partner who sleeps in my bed, which is not in the agreement."

I read it twice, slowly, as I read everything.

"I thought you didn't want a rescue," I said.

"I don't. This isn't one. It's a deal where we both get something, and I've decided I'd like to have someone to blame when the roof leaks."

I took the pen out of my pocket and signed it.

"That was quick," she said.

"I'm a man who finishes what he starts."

"And the no stories?"

"Rule's over," I said. "I want all of them."

"Then you get all of them." She reached across and took my hand. "Come to bed."

We left the coffee to go cold.

She pulled me down the hallway by the front of my shirt, and in the bedroom she turned and put her back against the closed door.

"Take off my clothes," she said. "All night. Don't stop until I say."

"You're going to say it?"

"Eventually."

I undressed her slowly.

I kissed her shoulders, her stomach, the long line of her hip, and I peeled off each piece of cloth and let it drop.
