Chapter 14: Terms of Surrender

Eliza's POV

I slept three hours on Dani's couch with a bag of frozen peas on my feet, because I had walked home in heels.

At nine on Sunday morning, Dani and I were in the cooler counting buckets of lisianthus when the shop bell rang.

"We're closed," Dani yelled.

"I know," said Tilly. "I brought coffee."

She stood inside the door in yesterday's blue dress and a man's work coat.

Behind the glass, on the sidewalk, Cillian stood with his hands in his pockets and his back to the window.

"He drove me," Tilly said. "He's not coming in unless you say so. I'd like you to say so, for five minutes."

Dani looked at me.

"I'm not saying anything," Dani said. "I'm holding a bucket."

I put down my clippers.

"Five minutes," I said.

He came in and took up half the shop, and he stopped just inside the door, as far from me as the room allowed.

He had not shaved. He looked like he hadn't sat down since I'd seen him.

Nobody touched the coffee.

"I'll go first," Tilly said, "because I'm the one with the right to be angriest and I'm tired of it."

She put her hands flat on my worktable.

"Eliza, you did not do this to me. Trevor did. I need you to hear that."

My throat closed.

"I stood in your shop and bought flowers from you," she said. "You gave me the best bouquet in the building and you let me call you the roommate. I would have been furious. I would also have wanted to know."

"I wanted him to say it."

"I know. I'd have wanted that too." She turned. "Cillian, say it."
