Chapter 15: The Reset

Hob carried him out of Harbor Hall in his arms.

I ran beside them with Ronan's hand locked in mine, and the cameras ran with us.

The League doctor met us at the clinic doors with a gurney and a needle.

She got the seizure down with a sedative, and then she pulled me into the corridor.

"It's moving faster than I told you," she said. "The contact points are failing. He has maybe ten hours."

"Alder said forty."

"Alder is not the one holding his skull."

I put my back against the wall.

Through the glass, Ronan lay still with a tube in his arm and his burned wrist strapped to the rail.

Hob stood over him with his cap crushed in both fists.

"I'll go to Pryce Tower," I said. "I'll sign whatever he puts in front of me."

"No," Hob said, without turning.

"Hob."

"I raised you in a scrapyard so you'd never sign anything."

"Then what do I do?"

He had no answer.

The side door of the clinic banged open.

A woman in a torn teal flight suit stepped in with a bleeding lip and a black eye closing over one side of her face.

Mira.

She had a Pryce badge on a lanyard and a scrap of paper held in her fist.

I was across the corridor before I knew I was moving.

"Get out."

"Wyn."

"Get out of here before I put you through that glass."

"I have the reset."

I stopped.

She held the paper out in a hand that shook.

"It's the code. It's the whole sequence, written out. It was in the safe in his study."

"You broke into Alder Pryce's safe."

"He's had the same safe code for ten years. It's Dane's birthday." Her laugh cracked. "Dane told me once, drunk, in the first season. I never used it."
