Chapter 12: Through the Front Gate

Larch Ridge sat at the top of a long switchback road.

A wall of stacked concrete barriers and a plank fence twenty feet high ringed it.

We reached the bottom of the road at sunrise on the sixth day since the roof.

I stood in the weeds beside the road with my bandaged hand in Jonas's.

I had not asked him to hold it.

He had done it, and I had let him.

"We could still go around," Bixby said behind us. "There's another way up through the old ski runs."

"No."

"They'll lock you in a room, Nina."

"They'll try."

"You've got eight days of his lies to cover and a man who can send a helicopter."

"I've got a list of forty names in your pocket," I said, "and two hundred people who watched a lieutenant lie. I've got the page. I have a strip of paper that shows what I am."

I looked up the road at the wall.

"And I've got the one thing he doesn't. I can hear him."

Jonas said, "Tell me what you want to do."

"Walk in the front gate."

"In daylight."

"In front of everybody."

He did not argue.

He had never argued when I was sure.

"Tonight there's a camp assembly," he said instead. "The General has every person in Larch Ridge in the lodge square at dusk. Calvin speaks. That's the only time the whole camp stands in one place."
