Chapter 28: Say It Into the Microphone

Nina's POV

The steel door swung open on its own weight, and I walked down into the boiler room with my hands empty.

Calvin stood under the lamp with his arms spread.

"Darling," he said. "You came."

"You said Bixby wouldn't see tomorrow."

"I said a lot of things, in the heat of it."

Bixby sat bound to a chair against the far wall with a rag in his mouth.

His eyes found mine and went wide, and he shook his head hard.

"Let him go," I said.

"Of course," Calvin said. "The moment you sit down."

He gestured at the second chair, bolted to the floor, with leather straps on its arms.

I looked at it for a long time.

"That's for me."

"It's for your comfort," Calvin said. "You'll be here a few days, only until the General's men have been dealt with. I'll make sure you're fed and warm. I'd never hurt you."

I stepped closer.

He was a pace from me now, so near I could smell the soap on his coat.

His voice came up behind my ears, flat and quiet.

*She sits, I strap her in, and I draw her dry in four hours. Bixby is the only man alive who can read my titers, so he goes in the furnace before dawn.*

I did not move.

I looked past his shoulder at the rack of radio gear.

A red light glowed on the broadcast microphone, and a small green needle moved with the hum of the room.

It was on.

He had turned it on to listen to me beg.

I stepped around him to the stand.

"What are you doing?" Calvin said.

"Sit down, Calvin."

"Nina, put that down."

I wrapped my hand around the stand and spoke into it.

"This is Nina Hartwell," I said, and my voice rolled out of every speaker on the lodge roof. "I'm standing in Calvin Reeve's boiler room. You're all hearing this."

Calvin went white.

He made a lunge for the cable.

I held the stand with one hand and caught his sleeve with the other.
