Chapter 14: Walking Out
The hospital let Jude go on the fifth day after he woke, with a cane and a paper bag of pills.
Five days of therapy had taught him to stand, to cross a room, and to hate the word "progress."
I had come every evening, and we had talked for hours, always with a nurse's cart rattling outside the door.
This was the first time I had seen him in daylight.
He stopped at the top of the hospital steps and looked up.
"That's a lot of sky," he said.
"Take your time."
"I'm going to look at it until it gets rude."
Hank's truck was at the curb with Maisy hanging out of the back window.
"That's him?" she said. "He's taller than he sounded."
Jude turned to me. "She's heard me?"
"Through the sewing room wall," Maisy said. "When Annabel talked to the air. You do a great 'dear God, woman.'"
Jude closed his eyes.
"I'd like to go back into the coma now."
Hank got out and looked him over from the boots up.
"Courier," Hank said.
"Sir."
"Can you drive stick?"
"Since I was fifteen."
"Good. When my knee goes, you take me to the feed store."
It was the warmest thing Hank had said to anyone in a year, and Jude seemed to know it.
He sat beside me in the back seat for the whole drive east.
His hand lay on the seat between us, and mine lay six inches from it.
"I don't know where to put my hands," he said quietly, so Maisy wouldn't hear. "I've been in your head for a month. Now I'm in a body, and it keeps doing things on its own."
