Chapter 19: The Insulin Run

Jude's POV

Annabel said no five times, and each time she said it differently.

The first was flat, and the third was angry. By the fifth she was only holding the kitchen counter with both hands.

"She has a list," she said. "She wants me through that gate. If I send the insulin, she's still got the lever."

"Annie," said Maisy.

Maisy sat at the table with her glucose monitor on her arm and her hands around a cup of tea.

"The woman said forty people. Forty, with the fridge dead. I'm nineteen and I have a monitor and a cellar. Some of them have a cooler and a prayer."

"It's a trap."

"It's a trap with people in it," Maisy said.

Nobody argued with that.

I put down my fork.

"Let me take it," I said.

"No."

"They don't know my face. Lindsey has never seen me, and Dane doesn't count. I drove that road for sixty-eight days. I know that gate better than any of you."

"You can barely walk."

"I can drive a truck."

"Jude."

I stood up and crossed the kitchen to her.

I did it on my own legs, without a cane.

"You said you picked me standing up," I said quietly. "I'd like to be useful standing up."

She looked at me for a long time.

"Two cases," she said finally. "Maisy's choice of what goes. And a radio, and you check in every hour."

"Courier Nine," I said.

"Courier Nine," Annabel said, and her mouth shook. "Be late and I'm coming."

"I'm never late to the same place twice."

Hank gave me his fire mask and the keys to the farm truck.

I left at eleven.

The Dome sat on the north side of the city, and the rain had been falling for six days.
