Chapter 4: The Mill Fire

I told Maisy everything at her kitchen table, and I started with the coffee mug.

I laid my palm on it.

It vanished.

"Annie," Maisy said.

"Watch." I named it, and it came back into my hand, still steaming.

She put both of her hands flat on the table.

"Thirty-one days from now," I said, "a grey rain starts. It falls for nine days. People who stay out in it go blank, and then they go violent."

"Annie."

"I lived through seventy-one days of it. Then Dane and Lindsey shut the shelter gate on me, and you were inside."

Maisy's eyes went to the monitor on her arm.

"I had your insulin," I said. "I was too late."

She said nothing for a long time.

"Is that why you were crying this morning?"

"Yes."

"Okay," she said. Her voice shook, and she steadied it. "Then I'm in. What do we do first?"

"Tell her I like her," said Plus One in my head. "She drives like she's being chased, and she believes the weird thing the first time. That's rare."

"He says hi," I told her.

"Who?"

"Long story. Tomorrow we're going to see Hank."

Hank Dwyer's farm sat on forty acres of dry hills east of town, with a barn, a well with a hand pump and a root cellar my grandmother used to call the safest place in Spokane County.

He was on his tractor when we pulled in. He cut the engine and climbed down slowly.
