Chapter 6: A Bed in the Dome
"You remember," I said.
"Thirty-three days ago," Lindsey said. "I woke up in my own bed. I've known for a month."
She kept her eyes on the wall across the hall.
"You've had a month," I said. "You still stood next to Dane in that lobby."
"He was useful. He can't lift a lock, Annabel. He never could. I closed the gate on you, and I'd do it again."
She said it flatly.
Beside me on the bench, my hands went cold.
"Why tell me?"
"Because you have something." Her eyes flicked to my canvas tote. "A pen vanished in your hand. You walked out of a warehouse with an empty cart. I've been in your life for nine years, and you never lifted a pallet."
I said nothing.
"I don't need to know how. I just want to make a trade." She turned and finally looked at me. "Half of what you've got, in my name. In exchange, Maisy gets a bed in the Dome, and so do you."
"She had a bed in the Dome last time."
"Last time you left her alone for two days."
"I went to get her insulin."
"Yes," Lindsey said. "And while you were gone, she was one more mouth I couldn't feed."
She said it in the same bright voice she had used in the lobby.
"There isn't enough for everyone, Annie. You know that. I'm only choosing who's on the inside."
"Plus One," I thought. "Say something."
"She's lying about the bed," Plus One said at once. "The first thing she'll do with half your supplies is shut you out in the rain. I'd like to say a very rude word, but I'm trying to be dignified."
