Chapter 7: Whose
"Say that again," I said.
Dylan swallowed.
"I didn't mean it that way."
"Which way did you mean it?"
"I mean..." He pressed his palms against his eyes. "We tried for four years. The treatments never worked. Then you tell me this, at midnight, after what you did today. What am I supposed to think?"
"That your wife is pregnant."
"Whose is it, Hannah?"
The porch light buzzed above us.
Behind the screen door, I heard Beth's footsteps stop.
"I've been home every night for five years," I said. "I've spent four of them on a table with my feet in stirrups, and you waited in the car."
"That's not fair."
"Ask me again."
He looked at me, and I saw him decide not to.
"Dylan."
"I just want a test," he said. "That's all. A paternity test, so we both know."
"You'll have one."
"Good."
"You'll have it when the baby is born, in front of a judge, with your own signature on the form. And then you can say sorry to a child."
He flinched.
The screen door opened, and Beth stepped out with the softball bat in one hand.
"Hello, Dylan," she said pleasantly. "Hannah says you're leaving."
"Beth, this has nothing to do with..."
"Funny. I thought it did."
He looked at the bat and then at me.
He took one step back, and then another.
"This isn't over," he said.
"I know," I said. "That's what I'm counting on."
He went down the steps and across the lawn and got into his car.
The headlights swung across the porch and were gone.
