Chapter 8: Her Robe

I answered the lawyer's email with one line.

The account was joint, I wrote, and I had moved half of it, which the bank's own receipt would confirm.

Then I wrote that he was welcome to file whatever he liked.

Beth read it over my shoulder and said, "Perfect. Send it before you think better of it."

I sent it.

That afternoon we drove to the house to get my things.

I had a right to go in, and I did not want to go alone.

Beth drove, and Seth followed in his truck because I had asked him to come as a witness.

"Dylan's at work," Seth said when we pulled up. "I checked the garage."

"Good."

"He might not be."

"Then we'll deal with it."

I let myself in with my own key.

The house was quiet and smelled of coffee.

There were two mugs in the sink, and a woman's shoes by the door.

They were white heels with a satin bow.

I walked into the kitchen.

Sheridan Vandever sat at my table in my blue silk robe, with a pot of tea and her feet up on my chair.

She looked up with a bright, easy smile.

"Hannah," she said. "I was hoping you'd stop by."

Behind me, I felt Beth go still.

"That's my robe," I said.

"Oh, is it?" Sheridan glanced down. "I'm so sorry. Dylan said to help myself, and I was freezing." She stood, quite gracefully, and came toward me with her hands out. "You look so pale. Come sit. I'll make you a cup."

"Take it off."
