Chapter 19: The Checks I Signed
Rafael Castellanos watched Lucia lean toward the black sedan and say one word through its window.
"No."
She did not say it loudly, and she did not say it twice.
The window went up, and the car pulled away from the curb with his stepmother's face behind the glass.
Lucia turned and found him under the tree.
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she walked away across the grass with her aunt, and she did not ask him to come.
He had been told to stay out of her way.
He understood now that staying out of her way was not the same as doing nothing.
That night he sat on the floor of his grandmother's attic, with a shoebox open in front of him.
He had found it the day after he woke in the kitchen, and he had not been able to open it since.
Inside were copies of letters he had been sent as co-trustee of the family foundation.
A settlement for a girl at Gabriel's boarding school, when Gabriel was sixteen.
A second settlement for a girl at the lake house, when Gabriel was eighteen.
Each one had a line for a signature, and each line had Rafael's name on it.
He had signed both without reading them, and he had told himself it was family business.
He turned the pages slowly.
Each settlement had protected Gabriel, and each one had left a girl on her own.
Lucia was the third.
On Tuesday, the foundation board met at seven, at the house.
It was supposed to be a family dinner.
The long dining room table was set with silver and white roses, and there were nine people around it, a lawyer in charcoal, three old board members and Gabriel's mother at the head in black.
