Chapter 5: The First Time (All the Way)

The water was still running. Her hand was flat on his chest, holding him back against the tile, and his heart was a hammer under her palm. He was still breathing hard, his mouth open, his eyes on her face like she was the only thing in the world that had ever made sense. She could feel the heat of him through her fingers, the way his chest rose and fell, the way he did not move even though she had not told him he could.

Not yet.

She said it out loud, and her voice was rough, scraped raw from what she had just done to him. 'Not yet.'

He swallowed. His throat moved, and she watched it, and she wanted to put her mouth there. 'Celia.'

'Don't talk.' She pressed her hand harder against his chest, and he went still under her touch like she had put a blade to his skin. 'Not until I tell you.'

He did not argue. He did not ask what she meant. He just stood there with the water beating down on his back and his eyes on her face, and she saw the exact moment he understood what she was going to do. His pupils went wide, and his lips parted, and his hands hung at his sides, and he waited. He waited the way a man waits for a verdict.

She reached past him and turned off the water. The silence that followed was so loud it rang. Drops fell from his hair onto his shoulders, ran down his chest, and she watched one trace the line of muscle down his stomach and disappear. Her mouth went dry.
