Chapter 7: Porch Rules

At ten past two in the morning I was sitting on Tamara's front steps in a coat over my pajamas, with a headache behind my left eye.

I had taken my pressure twice, and both numbers were worse than the doctor wanted.

I did not want to wake my sister.

Hamish had left his number on the back of a card the day he carried the chest, and he had said, "Any hour."

I typed, I'm sorry, it's two a.m., and sent it before I could take it back.

Three minutes later I typed the rest.

My pressure is high and I have a headache. I don't know if I'm being dramatic.

He answered in under a minute.

Not dramatic. I'm eight minutes away. Don't move.

He was there in six, in a gray sweatshirt, with a black bag over his shoulder.

He parked his truck at the curb and walked up the path with his hands where I could see them.

"I'm off the clock," he said. "I'm only here as a neighbor. Is that okay?"

"That's okay."

"Sit. Don't stand up for me."

He knelt on the step below mine and opened the bag.

His hands were steady and warm.

He wrapped the cuff above my elbow and pumped it up without a word, and he watched the dial with his lips pressed together.

The cuff hissed out.

"One forty-eight over ninety-four," he said. "That's high, but you're not in the danger zone. Any spots in your vision? Pain under your ribs on the right?"

"No."

"Swelling in your face or hands?"
