Chapter 8: Table Fourteen
The invitation came in a cream envelope on Friday, with a handwritten note inside.
Table 14 is yours, Mrs. Becky. Nobody at Harmon's has forgotten Maisie. The foreman.
He had worked in the Harmon Furniture warehouse for thirty years, and he had built Maisie's crib himself.
On Saturday night I walked into the Grand Plaza ballroom in a navy maternity dress, on Tamara's arm, with my feet in flat shoes and a doctor's note in my purse.
Two hundred guests turned around.
The sixtieth anniversary banner hung over the stage, and Virginia stood under it in cream silk and pearls.
Russell sat at the family table.
Kelsey sat beside him in a green dress with her hand on her stomach.
Table 14 was at the back, next to the kitchen doors, and it was full of warehouse men in their one good suit each.
The foreman stood up and pulled out my chair.
"Mrs. Becky," he said. "Heard you had a rough week."
"I've had better."
"We heard about the clipboard," a younger man said, and the table went quiet. "Nobody on this floor signed anything."
"Thank you," I said, and I meant it so hard I had to look at my plate.
Dinner went by in a haze of rolls and speeches.
At nine o'clock, Virginia tapped her glass at the microphone.
"Sixty years ago my husband's father opened this store with two sofas and a loan," she said. "Family built it. Family keeps it. I'd like to say a few words about what that means."
