Chapter 4: The Designer

On Tuesday morning I carried a cardboard tube into the office of the housing charity and set it on the chair's desk.

The chair was a brisk woman in a green cardigan with a lanyard around her neck.

She had hugged me at the gala.

"Bethany! Wasn't Saturday glorious? Eighty-five thousand dollars for the night. Your husband's lot was our top seller."

"I know," I said. "I came about the drawings."

"What drawings?"

I pulled the sheets out of the tube and unrolled them across her desk, weighted at the corners with her stapler and two coffee mugs.

They were the floor plans and elevations for the Seven-Day Home Reset.

Every sheet carried the same small mark in the lower corner.

T.M.

"Neil's program notes say he draws all of these," the chair said.

"He frames them," I said. "I draw them. I've drawn every room Holbrook Homeworks has sold for nine years, and the walnut wall at Larch Street is mine."

The chair studied the corner mark.

Then she looked at me over her glasses.

"And the Reset was his idea?"

"His donation. My design."

"Then why," she said slowly, "am I only now hearing about it?"

"Because I'm the one who never asked to be on the list."

She tapped the T.M. with one finger.
