Chapter 14: What the Folder Kept

Lane took his helper out the back door and said he'd be in the alley with the truck.

He looked at me before he went, and I nodded that I was fine.

Then it was Brett and me and the cracked table.

"You can say it now," I said. "Whatever you've been carrying since the auction."

He stood with his hands on the back of a chair and did not sit.

"You stopped telling me things," he said.

"What things?"

"Anything. Two years ago you came home and told me about every client, every bolt of fabric, every bad invoice. I knew your day before I took off my boots."

His voice was low and even, which was how he said the worst things.

"Then it was the dishwasher. Then it was what time you'd be home."

"You stopped asking."

"You took Wenger's calls in the kitchen and walked out to the porch to do it."

"He was bidding on the Carrington installation. I took the call outside so I wouldn't talk shop over your dinner."

"You never said that."

"You never asked."

He breathed in through his nose.

"And you called my crew a hobby."

I opened my mouth, and nothing came.

He nodded slowly.

"The Carrington pitch last spring. You were laughing with the purchasing manager and you said, Brett's got his crew, that's his hobby, the studio is the real business. I was standing behind you with the coffee."

I remembered it then, all of it.

The laugh had been nerves.
